Weekly Updates from the Headteacher

We have had a great 'red' day in school today, raising money for Comic Relief. It has been heart-warming to see the level of support from students and staff for such a good cause - a reminder of what this money will support can be found here. I would also like to thank Mrs Pitman and our Student Leaders for organising and taking part in a special 'Comic Relief Medina Cycle Challenge!'.

This is a vitally important time for our Year 11 students and a number were involved in the first set of practical assessments this week. It was pleasing to hear about the details of these practical GCSEs in both Food & Nutrition and Drama.

It was World Happiness Day yesterday, declared by the United Nations in 2013, recognising the importance of happiness as "a fundamental goal" in people's lives around the world. This year’s theme - Caring & Sharing, reminds us that lasting happiness comes from caring for each other, feeling connected and being part of something bigger'. In our non-stop, fast-paced, busy and sometimes challenging world, it can be easy to forget how important this is and what a difference small gestures can make to someone's day.

Thank you to the parents/carers of Year 9 students for getting their Key Stage 4 Options Forms returned to us. We are now in the process of reviewing these and will be holding a short meeting with each student to discuss these over the coming weeks.

Post 16 Transport Policy Statement Consultation 2025/2026

The local authority is required to consult on a Post 16 transport policy statement each academic year.

The Isle of Wight Council does offer, under discretionary power, a transport service to enable Post 16 students with special educational needs and disabilities (usually with an Education, Health and Care Plan) to access a place that is the closest suitable provision for their needs. The local authority currently charges a parental contribution for this service.

The Council proposes to increase a parental contribution from £570 in the 2024/25 academic year to £582.54 for 2025/26 academic year, in line with CPI (Consumer Price Index). The proposed contributions have been benchmarked with other local authorities and fall into the lower sector of charges.

The consultation is live and will close at 11:59pm on Friday 25 April. The local authority invites your views/comments on the Draft Policy which can be found here. Please send any views on the draft policy to strategic.planning@iow.gov.uk by the closing date.

Rugby News
Our Year 9 rugby team took on the Year 10s last Thursday on a beautiful afternoon on the bottom field. The match was well contested with big tackles, individual plays, stunning tries and excellent conversions. The Year 10s came out on top, winning 43-25. Well played both teams!

On 11 March, we hosted a Year 7 rugby tournament. Alongside our team, Ryde Academy, The Bay and Ryde School took part, all bringing some really enthusiastic rugby players. All matches were played in good spirits with some great tackling.

Standout plays for Medina were two awesome individual tries from Max and Oscar. They used their pace and agility to beat at least 4/5 defenders to score. Other standout performers were Arthur with some awesome jinking runs and committed tackling, and Ollie and George who used their power to gain ground and tackle some big opponents. Well done to all involved!

The Year 9/10 Rugby team played a match away against The Bay on Tuesday afternoon.

The game was played in great spirits by both sets of players. With some excellent running rugby producing some wonderful tries for both teams, there were also some big hits and superb kicks.

The final score was 48-37 to the Bay. Well played, lads!

Pi Day

A successful Pi Day celebration last Friday was filled with excitement, learning, and, of course, plenty of pie! One of the highlights was the "Guess the Pie" competition, where participants had to try and guess what pie was in the tin based on sight. Students tested their memory by reciting as many digits of π as possible. The crowd was amazed when the winner flawlessly recited over 100 digits! Throughout the day, students and teachers took part in engaging maths challenges, a fun pie-tasting station, and a surprise pizza treat that delighted everyone. The celebration wrapped up with a delicious pi themed card game where teachers and students enjoyed playing a new game while reflecting on a fun and educational experience. It was truly a Pi Day to remember!

Red Nose Day Fundraising

Well done to the Student Leaders who organised a fantastic red-themed mufti day and cycle challenge for Comic Relief today. We will update next week on the distance cycled and how much we managed to raise.
