History Trip to Belgium

On Wednesday 26 February, 46 students and five members of staff departed for an unforgettable history trip to Belgium. Following the coach journey via the Eurotunnel, the group went to Hooge Crater, a private World War 1 museum. Students were interested in the extensive collection of weapons, equipment and photographs. They were particularly surprised by the size of some of the bullets on display.

Alan, the coach driver, then took the group to see Tyne Cot British Cemetery. The students had the chance to walk around and time to look up if any of their relatives were on any of the plaques. Finally, they made their way to Langemark German Cemetery to look at the difference in the way it was laid out.

The next day, Alan took the group to have a look at a  bunker which had 6 rooms and was very small. In the last room, there were some coffins laid out for people to see. Students had to look through a very small window to see them.

Students were then taken to PJ's chocolate-making workshop, an experience not to be missed when visiting Belgium - famous for its premium quality chocolate. They all watched a demonstration and had the chance to make their own bar of chocolate.

The group headed to Brugge for lunch on the banks of the river.  They then had some free time to do some souvenir shopping.

Back in Langemark and after an evening meal of pizzas, they then went to the Menin Gate memorial for the last post ceremony, where three students participated by laying a wreath on behalf of Medina College. It was a very moving experience, paying our respects to the soldiers who fought and lost their lives there.

Unfortunately, due to illness, the journey home had to start earlier than anticipated on the final day. However, the students all demonstrated their resilience and were incredibly supportive of each other. The students were a pleasure to take on this trip and made us all very proud.
