Year 10 Taster Day at The Island VI Form
Carisbrooke College and Medina College Year 10 students visited The Island VI Form last week to experience a taster of what Post-16 education is like if they decide to follow an A Level / Level 3 course route in the future.
They were fully immersed in VI Form life as they were able to choose their own appropriate outfits for the day (there is no uniform at The Island VI Form, just a dress code) and leave the site at lunchtime or experience the VI Form Canteen. Most importantly though, they attended workshops to experience each of the five curriculum faculty areas.
One example of the workshops they attended was the Strawberry Lace Challenge in Science/PE. Students tested the tensile strength of strawberry laces to see if we could use them as shoe laces by adding masses one at a time until the lace broke. Once they had tested just one lace, the challenge was to see if they could make them stronger by combining 3 laces together. Carisbrooke 10 A tutor group managed 2.0 kg and Medina 10D managed an impressive 3.1kg!
The day really inspired students to start thinking seriously about their future educational pathway and the sorts of careers they might like to go in to. Thank you to the staff at The Island VI Form for providing this exciting opportunity.
